Research is a central and essential part of what we do within the NHS. The pursuit of the best evidence-based practices and treatments for our patients, service users, carers, and staff, sits at the heart of what we do as a Trust. It also fully aligns with the Trust values of People, Empowerment and Partnership.

Research is one of our strategic quality objectives: “We will engage in a comprehensive programme of research to enable practice to be built on the best available evidence”.

The Research and Innovation (R&I) Department, led by Ruth Lambley-Burke, oversees research projects, promotes, and encourages a research culture within the Trust.

    The MPFT Research and Innovation (R&I) team have led or are collaborators on five successful National Institute of Health Research (NIHR) Clinical Research Network (CRN) Innovation and Improvement funding bids.

  • Research study finds substantial and sustained prescribing of pain medicines to patients with inflammatory arthritis

    Dr Ian Scott, who is a Consultant Rheumatologist at MPFT and Honorary Senior Lecturer in Keele University’s School of Medicine and is funded by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR), has played a leading role on a study examining pain medicine prescribing in patients with inflammatory arthritis.

  • Video Research Explores Dementia-Care Worker Skills

    Researchers based at the Trust are carrying out video-ethnographic research to explore the ‘naturalistic’ skillset used by dementia-care workers. John Chatwin and Katherine Ludwin are carrying out this 18-month study which is being funded by the National Institute for Health Research.
