This innovative, free online course, created by the Midlands Partnership University NHS Foundation Trust (MPFT) in partnership with Keele University, and the University of Worcester, offers comprehensive guidance designed to equip health and social care professionals with essential research skills, empowering them to take their first steps into the world of research.

One year after its launch, the 'Starting Out in Health and Social Care Research' course has seen significant success, with over 1,300 learners enrolled from 88 countries. This free, globally accessible online course, created by the Midlands Partnership University NHS Foundation Trust (MPFT) in partnership with Keele University and the University of Worcester, aims to provide comprehensive, step-by-step guidance for health and social care professionals eager to embark on their research journeys.

Launched on FutureLearn in April 2023, the course was developed by the award-winning MPFT STARS (Supporting The Advancement of Research Skills) team. Collaborating with Dr Tom Kingstone, Senior Lecturer in Mental Health and Wellbeing, and Karl Gimblett, Lecturer in Clinical Education at Keele University, the course targets professional groups traditionally less engaged in research, such as primary and social care services, nurses, midwives, allied health professionals, and social workers.

Since its inception, the course has not only attracted a diverse group of professionals, including radiographers, midwives, social workers, pharmacists, psychologists, ophthalmologists, and paediatricians, but has also garnered overwhelmingly positive feedback. One participant remarked, "Thank you for this course. It has really informed me about the research process and given me resources to use in the future. It has given me confidence to move forward designing my own research. I have recommended this course to others in my team." Another shared, "One of the key points I learnt from the real researchers is that there are many different routes into research. Prior to this session I thought research had to be completed via completing a course at university. This session has allowed me to take my first steps in implementing research with my current role."

Course evaluation results show that 73% of participants have applied their new knowledge, and 65% have shared their insights with colleagues. Participants have expressed their appreciation for the course’s impact on their confidence and ability to engage in research. One learner noted, "I feel empowered to be involved in research and contribute to patient care and I am grateful for all the support that is available throughout this process." Another highlighted the practical aspects, stating, "The researcher videos were helpful - particularly the positives and benefits of research funding (as well as the challenges!) I did not realise there were so many organisations that would provide funding opportunities and I will be looking into these further as well.”

The 'Starting Out in Health and Social Care Research' course underscores the commitment of MPFT, Keele University, and the University of Worcester to fostering research skills and supporting career development in health and social care. As the course continues to grow, it not only enhances evidence-based practice but also provides new opportunities for community involvement in research, ultimately supporting better outcomes for service users and populations.
